报告摘要：

What is the value of mathematics, both tangible and intangible? What is the significance of mathematics to the exercise of citizenship in the 21st century? The French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte claimed that the prosperity of a nation is measured by the excellence of its mathematics. In our own days, what is the impact of mathematical knowledge in the development, social and economical, of our nations? And what can we, in academia, do to contribute?

报告人简介：

Marcelo Viana，巴西纯粹与应用数学研究所（IMPA）教授、所长，国际著名动力系统专家。1984年获波尔图大学学士学位，1990年获IMPA博士学位，师从Jacob Palis。主要研究领域为动力系统、遍历理论与分岔理论，与Artur Avila合作证明了Zorich–Kontsevich猜想。曾任巴西数学会主席（2013–2015）、国际数学联盟副主席（2011–2014），2018年担任里约国际数学家大会（ICM）组织委员会主席。曾获古根海姆奖（1993）、TWAS数学奖（1998）、拉马努金奖（2005）、法兰西学会Louis D.科学大奖（2016）等荣誉，为巴西、智利、葡萄牙科学院及TWAS院士。
